Many people in the fitness industry are touting Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators as the next big thing. Most consider them to be safe yet potent steroid alternatives, allowing you to improve performance, musculature and body composition without any of the dangerous hormonal fallout that steroids might offer.
In this article, I’ll be looking at two of the most popular SARMs available on today’s market: Ostarine and RAD 140. I’ll run through what I like about each one, before ending with my recommendation as to which of these SARMs I think is the superior.
Let’s begin with the strong stuff: RAD 140, also known as Testolone. It is one of the most powerful SARMs you can get.
Of all available SARMs, Testolone is the one that many users compare the most with steroids due to its potency. You can expect great improvements in strength and lean mass if you include Testolone cycles in your supplement regime, whilst allowing room for a decent amount of recomposition. The results will likely be far more pronounced with Testolone than with many other SARMs.
To give you a flavour of what Testolone can do for you, it has an anabolic: androgenic ration of 80:1. Don’t worry if this doesn’t mean much to you: it doesn’t mean much to most people! All it means is that it has an incredibly potent effect on your body’s androgen receptors. Compounds with high anabolic: androgenic ratios are known to be great mass builders and Testolone is one of the best.
Users and researchers alike report that doses up to 20mg daily, for a 6-8 week cycle, will suffice for most lifters and will lead to lean muscle gains of around 4-5kg (10lbs) in a single cycle. Exceeding this dosage is not necessary- Testolone is such a potent compound that smaller amounts work best.
As with many SARMs, the major downside to Testolone is the lack of information on known side effects. Whilst clinical studies and much user feedback suggest there are little to no side effects to be had from using RAD 140, more data will always be welcome on the subject.
When I’ve used Testolone in the past, I have made use of a post cycle therapy (PCT). Some sources will say it’s unnecessary, but I think it’s always better to be sure. With such a strong compound as RAD 140, I think it’s best to cover your bases and ensure that there will be no lasting hormonal complications.
Ostarine (MK 2866)
Ostarine is mostly popular for the opposite reason to RAD 140. It is one of the milder SARMs, often praised for the nonetheless significant gains it elicits without side effects and with no disruption to any other bodily functions. This is the reason that it’s one of my favourites, if not my outright favourite.
It will get you good results without you noticing any changes in your body other than increased mass, energy and athleticism.
Benefits of Ostarine are manifold. It greatly increases muscle mass and improves overall strength. Whenever I’ve taken it, I’ve managed to spend a full 6-8 week cycle hitting new personal records in my major lifts near enough every single week. You can easily add ten to fifteen percent to your large compound movements with an 8 week cycle, especially if you’re relatively new to lifting.
As well as these improvements, Ostarine is notable for improving bone health. Joints will feel smoother and lifts better supported in the short term towards the end of a cycle, and injuries will be far less likely. It is also good for hearth health, and will improve insulin resistance. This latter is part of the reason it’s often used as a tool for cutting, though I’ve used it to great effect in both cutting and bulking phases.
I’ve effectively used Ostarine for 6-10 week cycles, and would usually keep the dose at around 15-30mg daily. The upper end of this range should only be explored by experienced lifters who have used it before. No PCT will be required after an Ostarine cycle. I’ve never made use of one and have never suffered any ill effects.
Ostarine vs RAD 140: My Thoughts
When you’re choosing between two SARMs as popular and well-proven as these two, you’re not really going to make a bad decision. Both will give you very good effects. If you’re purely looking to put on mass- and to do so quickly- RAD 140 will be the way to go.
However, I love Ostarine. It’s a safe all-rounder that will give you multiple benefits, whilst still enabling you to put on serious mass when you want to. If you’re new to SARMs, it’s the one I would go with, and I would invite even more experienced users and lifters to make use of a few Ostarine cycles
